How to check the amount of traffic to your blog

If money making is the important aim of your blog, then the most important deal that you might be looking forward to is the traffic to your blog. Traffic is directly proportional to the money you make using you blog or website. There are different methods for driving different traffic into your blog/website. One of this is sharing via social networks or media. For me, social networks are the highest source of traffic. Then there comes another factor, which is the type of traffic you want to drive into your blog/website. The traffic can be from  a Specified country or of a specified age group or gender.  So even if you have high quality articles, if you don’t know how to drive the right audience to the blog, then you are wasting hell a lot of your time. That is not the right kind of traffic you want. For example, consider that you have a blog post about girls’ ornaments. If your traffic driven to the post is of male gender, then the possibility of the traffic increasing further is going to be pretty low. So traffic is really important to your blog/ website.
So why would you want to check your blog traffic every now and then? Well, the first reason is to know how much money we can make from our blog. Then you might want to keep track of how your competitors of the same niche are doing at the moment so that we could make sufficient changes to excel over them. You should never allow you traffic to go below a consistent rate.
So how can I check the traffic to a blog/website? Well, there are paid as well as free tools for performing that task. Personally, I prefer the free tools as  a newbie blogger. Free tools are more than enough for keeping  track of most details about you traffic. Some of the free traffic checking tools are the following

1.Google Adwords Display planner.
Google Adwords display planner is a tool used for planning different posts with the keywords associated with it. It helps in finding each keywords targeted audiences and other details like the age group and gender the keyword is aimed at. But this can also be used as a traffic checking tool for your blog/website. Enter the link of your website in the “what customers are looking for “ field under the get ideas tab in Display planner.  You can then get the traffic details of your website. I am pretty much sure that these results are very accurate because, yeah, it is Google’s and they have the best SEO experts with them.

2.Alexa.com
Yes! It’s the most popular ranking website now. If you ask someone the ranking of their website, then 99% of them will be saying the Alexa ranking of their website. So how can you check the alexa ranking and traffic status of you website/blog? Go to alexa.com and type in your website name and hit enter. You can view the global Ranking as well as the ranking in your country. Other details include the bounce rate , page-view per person and daily time on the site.  It also has detail about the types of traffic like their location, gender, age, status etc. Thus alexa provides a set of useful information about your sites. But is Alexa accurate? Are these results correct. As a matter of fact, it isn’t very accurate. This details are only from users that use the Alexa toolbar in their browser.Even though it is not fully accurate, you can predict  the traffic to some extent.

3.Compete.com
Compete.com is a US based company that finds the US traffic of top 100,000 blogs. To use this free tool, go to compete.com and enter you website link in the search box and tap enter. You will find the traffic rates of you website with graphs of growth or decline. But the only problem is that it has details of US visitors only. So the traffic won’t be very accurate unless you majority traffic is from the US.

4.BuySellAds.com
Buysellads.com is yet another popular website for checking blog traffic. Since it is an network for selling banners of ads. It can help you to earn some money too. Since they also want traffic from website/blog, they also keep track of the  traffic. But the statitics we get from theis work on the condition that the webpage or blog should have a BSA script in its code. So it should be somewhat accurate with the figures.

                5.QuantCast.com
Quant cast is another website for tracking your blog traffic. It is also an advertising company and they doesn’t provide as much accurate results as the Google Analytics but you can always have a check. If you are starter blogger and your blog is relatively new, then they won’t show any results and might show insufficient results. They use their own data source for ranking the blog. Though it might show much lesser views than what is shown with Google’s tool.

Whichever ranking or traffic calculating tool you use, you can get the most accurate results from Google’s analytics tool. If you are newbie blogger like me, you should always look for your competitors. But don’t  waste your time on checking ranks and traffics alone. Use you time mostly for writing quality articles. Only check rankings and traffic if you have a lot of extra time. Happy blogging :)

This is great, I'm going to have to experiment with google adwords, someone told me if you display other ads on your blog, you are not allowed to display google ads, so I'll have to break some of my contracts to get in on this I'm thinking. If its worth it....

You've got nice tips here. I look up my numbers when I apply for a sponsored post. I have been thinking of getting more involved than that though, to see what readers like via analyzing the numbers, and things like that.

Thanks for sharing the tips. The only tool I know is Alexa. Even though it's not that accurate, I can still get enough information about my traffic and it's helping me a lot.
